What is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease named after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with it. It is a rapidly degenerative neuromuscular disease. It affects the nervous system by slowly destroying the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord that affect and control the movement of the body.
ALS patients gradually lose the ability to walk, talk, speak, and even suffer respiratory failure. For a person diagnosed with ALS, it can feel overwhelming. However, there are many treatment options available that ease the symptoms or improve function.
Conventional ALS treatments include physical, occupational, and speech therapies along with more aggressive and invasive approaches that can include medication, feeding tubes and breathing devices.
THE COMMON SYMPTOMS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Early signs and symptoms of ALS include:
- Difficulty walking or doing your normal daily activities
- Tripping and falling
- Weakness in your leg, feet or ankles
- Hand weakness or clumsiness
- Slurred speech or trouble swallowing
- Muscle cramps and twitching in your arms, shoulders and tongue
- Difficulty holding your head up or keeping good posture
ALS often starts in the hands, feet or limbs, and then spreads to other parts of your body. As the disease advances and nerve cells are destroyed, the muscles progressively weaken. This eventually affects chewing, swallowing, speaking and breathing.
CBD or cannabidiol has been known to ease severe pains and can bring some relief to the symptoms of ALS:
- Analgesic properties: ALS is a painful disease, so CBD is used to ease the pain.
- Muscle relaxation: ALS causes the muscles to seize up, CBD helps to relax the body and relieve some of the tension.
- Bronchodilation: CBD opens up the airways making it easier for the sufferer to breathe.
- Saliva reduction: As the disease develops it becomes more and more difficult for the sufferer to swallow, causing an increase of saliva developing in the mouth, CBD consumption causes the saliva glands to stop producing so much saliva.
- Appetite stimulation: Similar to THC CBD can cause the user to feel hungry after consumption.
- Inducing sleep: CBD can make the user feel sleepy, which is good for people who are in pain and find it difficult to both fall asleep and stay asleep.
A study undertaken at the Complutense University in Madrid showed the effects of CBD in mice with ALS. The mice were administered small doses of CBD and the effects were monitored for a short period of time. They found that due to the CBD the progression of the disease in fact slowed down, extending the life expectancy of the mice by 6 days on average. This time frame was translated into three years for humans.
Cannabinoids are indeed able to delay ALS progression, improve ones quality of life and prolong one’s life.
