Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract. Types of IBD include:
- Ulcerative colitis. This condition causes long-lasting inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.
- Crohn’s disease. This type of IBD is characterized by inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which often spreads deep into affected tissues.
Common symptoms are as follows:
- Crohn’s disease include rectal bleeding, severe abdominal pain and cramping, constipation, persistent diarrhoea or a persistent feeling that the bowels are not entirely empty.
- Ulcerative Colitis is quite similar to Crohn’s disease except for the fact that it only affects only the innermost layer of the colon. The symptoms of Colitis are similar to Crohn’s disease and include fever, decreased appetite, weight loss, fatigue and dysmenorrhea in women.
The effect of Medical Cannabis on IBD
Recent research has also shown that medical cannabis can stimulate the appetite in affected patients, resulting in healthy weight gain and an overall improvement in symptoms. Moreover, the same study found that, after three months of treatment with medical cannabis, patients affected by Crohn’s Disease or Colitis enjoyed a better quality of life, greater ability to work a normal job, increased ability to perform daily tasks and maintain a social life, and a drastic decrease in pain. These results were reported without accompanying side effects.
2.INFLAMMATORY BOWEL SYNDROME
IBS is a ‘syndrome’, meaning a group of symptoms. Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects predominantly the colon or large bowel, which is the part of the digestive tract that stores stool. It is not a disease but a functional disorder, meaning that the bowel does not work, or function, correctly. IBS does not damage the colon or other parts of the digestive system and is not a precursor to other health problems or diseases such as colon cancer.

- Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that is typically relieved or partially relieved by passing a bowel movement
- Excess gas
- Diarrhoea or constipation — sometimes alternating bouts of diarrhoea and constipation
- Mucus in the stool
The effect of Medical Cannabis on IBS
- Diarrhoea: cannabis has been shown to reduce hypermotility and ease abdominal cramping. Hypermotility is when food moves through the GI tract too fast.
- Abdominal Pain: a reduced pain threshold is another major symptom of IBS. Cannabis has been shown to reduce visceral sensitivity in those with gastrointestinal disorders. “Visceral perception” is another way of saying internal pain sensitivity. A 2004 study suggests that there is strong evidence for cannabinoid treatments in managing bowel diseases like IBS, partly thanks to the herb’s ability to reduce nerve pain and partly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Another 2008 review highlights the discovery that cannabinoid treatment can calm sensitivity and inflammation in the intestinal lining of those with gastrointestinal disorders.
- Depression: the mental symptoms of IBS are just as important to address as the physical. CBD treatment effectively eases anti-social and reduces anxiety-like behaviour in minutes.
