CBD oil provides the hope of a better treatment for Lupus
What is Lupus?
Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.
Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments. The most distinctive sign of lupus — a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across both cheeks — occurs in many but not all cases of lupus.
Some people are born with a tendency toward developing lupus, which may be triggered by infections, certain drugs or even sunlight. While there’s no cure for lupus, treatments can help control symptoms.
Common symptoms are as follows:
No two cases of lupus are exactly alike. Signs and symptoms may come on suddenly or develop slowly, may be mild or severe, and may be temporary or permanent. Most people with lupus have mild disease characterized by episodes — called flares — when signs and symptoms get worse for a while, then improve or even disappear completely for a time.
The signs and symptoms of lupus that you experience will depend on which body systems are affected by the disease. The most common signs and symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Joint pain, stiffness and swelling
- Butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose or rashes elsewhere on the body
- Skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure (photosensitivity)
- Fingers and toes that turn white or blue when exposed to cold or during stressful periods (Raynaud’s phenomenon)
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Dry eyes
- Headaches, confusion and memory loss
The effect of Medical Cannabis on Lupus
Cannabis can also help with the pain associated with inflammatory diseases like lupus. Receptors CB1 and CB2 are involved in the mediation of pain caused by inflammation, so as the cannabinoids in cannabis act upon the receptors, pain decreases. A study found that cannabis use is prevalent among the chronic pain population and their primary responses for reasons for use included improvements in pain.
Due to the nature of this disease, lupus can cause inflammation almost anywhere in the body. When inflammation occurs in places like the heart, lungs, kidneys, or brain, suppressing this inflammation becomes a very serious task. As a result, cannabis’s ability to mediate the inflammatory response is immensely helpful to anyone who suffers from lupus.
Cannabis is considered an ideal treatment for Lupus patients to help cope with the symptoms of the disorder like nausea and pain. It’s also known to be an anti-inflammatory, suppressing certain parts of the immune system. If left untreated and unmanaged, Lupus can become a serious illness which poses the risk for a host of complications.
Recommended Lupus treatment with CBD
CBD/THC Essential Oil: 3 Drops – 2-3 times a day (Start on 2 drops 2-3x a day. Increase every 48-72 hours by 1 drop per dosing. You can carry on increasing as need be)
Start on the lowest recommended dosage, 2 drops twice daily, to be safe, and increase as you feel comfortable until the desire effect is reached. If you feel “high” or abnormal, decrease dosage and remain on same dosage for 72 hours before increasing it again. Dosing twice a day, morning and later afternoon, is normally sufficient.
